World Buskers Festival

Headliners for SCIRT World Buskers Festival 2014 nominated for local and international awards

SCIRT World Buskers Festival 2014 organisers are celebrating their picks for their upcoming summer event after nine performers garnered national and international awards nominations.

The Christchurch-based festival is one of biggest street performance festivals in the world. From small inner city performance beginnings, it has grown to feature 55 acts from ten countries over 11 days, with the core events programme being staged at Busker Park in North Hagley Park.

Five of the SCIRT World Buskers Festival 2014 artists have been nominated in a number of categories in the 2013 NZ Comedy Guild Awards this December.

The NZ Comedy Guild Awards celebrate New Zealand comedians and showcase the country's up and coming talent, with winners announced on December 8.

International funny man Nick Rado has returned from performing around the world and secured four nominations including Best Show Concept, Best Show, Best MC and The Green Roomer award. Nick is part of the Buskers Festival's 'Nothing but Stand-Up: The Gents' show held at the Big Top in Busker Park.

MC of that show, Jeremy Elwood, has been nominated for the Best Male and Gag of the Year awards.

MC of 'Nothing but Stand-Up: The Ladies', Urzila Carlson, increasingly known for her recurring role in television panel show Seven Days, has nominations for Best Female and the Kevin Smith Memorial Cup for best Artistic Achievement, following previous wins for Best Female Comedian at the 2010, 2011 and 2012 awards.

NZ Comedy Guild's 2010 Female Comedian of the Decade, Michele A' Court, has been nominated for the Best Show Award for 'Stuff I forgot to tell my daughter', which she will perform at the Festival. She is also nominated for Best Female.

Justine Smith, a previous winner of the Best Female award, is back in the running again, and like Rado, has also been nominated for the coveted Green Roomer award.  The former Billy T Award winner is another participant in 'Nothing but Stand-Up: The Ladies'.

In addition to the national comedy awards announcement, Christchurch performer Sam Wills, better known as The Boy with Tape on His Face, has been nominated for Best Specialty Act in the highly acclaimed London Cabaret Awards 2014.  The Awards are a celebration of the growing cabaret scene in London, rewarding the most dedicated, talented and inspiring members of its community.

A handful of British performers appearing at the festival - Dusty Limits, Lili La Scala - starring in 'Songs to Make You Smile' - and 2013 festival favourite Le Gateau Chocolat have also received nominations in the awards for Best Vocal Performance.

SCIRT World Buskers Festival 2014 Artistic Director Jodi Wright says the nominations highlight the calibre of the festival.

"These nominations just showcase the talent the Festival attracts and how much we've grown in scope with what we offer. We still have our street performer roots with our busking pitches at Busker Park and our performers still rely on the generosity of what the audience puts into their hats. But we have expanded into indoor fringe-style shows, including cabaret and burlesque, and I love that we can and do stage a world-class festival right here in Christchurch each year."

While the majority of the festival will be held at Busker Park, the festival will also be spreading the entertainment across the city at The Terrace Pitch, Lane Neave Music Pitch - Re:Start Mall,  Gap Filler Pallet Pavilion, New Brighton Basketball Courts, Botanic Gardens, Mashina Lounge - Christchurch Casino and at The Press Club - Christ's College.

Wright is urging festival-goers to secure their seats to the various indoor shows now to avoid missing out after they were released earlier this month. As always, the extensive outdoor street show programme is accessible to all without pre-booking.

"Seats to evening indoor shows are going quick so people should jump online to avoid disappointment!"

The online pre-release seat offer is available until the pre-release seat allocation is gone. After this seats are available on the day of the show from 11am at the Buskers Bookings Booth in Busker Park - North Hagley Park.  To beat the queue and book pre-release seats and view the full programme visit
