World Buskers Festival

Buskers take to seaside with open-air street shows in New Brighton

This month New Brighton will play host to two days of fun and entertainment as the SCIRT World Buskers Festival 2014 sets its stage by the sea.

Ryan Security 'Buskers at Brighton' will transform the New Brighton basketball courts into an exciting arena on January 25-26 as the festival spreads the laughs from its 11-day event across the city.

New Brighton performances will feature 14 artists including circus performers, trapeze artists, acrobatics, comedians, contortionists, jugglers and live music from 11am to 5pm each day.

Performers from USA, Australia and Israel will be heading to the courts with the likes of Cirque No Problem performing an amazing comedy show that combines traditional and modern circus acts, and Derek Derek using Chinese pole acrobatics to tell the story of a nerdy dancer attempting to find love.

This is the sixth time the festival will be holding special performances at New Brighton and festival organisers are looking forward to the return to the seaside suburb.

Festival Director Jodi Wright says, "It's a real blast taking the festival across the city and we're looking forward to making some noise in New Brighton."

The Christchurch-based festival is one of the biggest street performance festivals in the world and is still the most popular feature in the city's cultural calendar after 21 years.

In all, the festival will feature 55 acts from 10 countries and will run from 16 to 26 January 2014.

While the majority of the festival will be held at Busker Park in North Hagley Park, it will also be spreading the laughs across the city at The Terrace Pitch, Lane Neave Music Pitch - Re:Start Mall, Gap Filler Pallet Pavilion, Botanic Gardens, Mashina Lounge - Christchurch Casino, The Press Club - Christ's College, as well as the New Brighton basketball courts.
